Pasupatinath “the temple of living beings”

Dedicated to Lord Shiva temple existence dates back on 5th century and is one of the four most important religious sites in Asia. Pasupatinath temple standing on the banks of the holy bagmati river is the important Hindu temple of Nepal. The temple is surrounded by the bustling market of religious stalls. Its astonishing architectural splendor the temple stands a symbol of faith, religion, culture and tradition among Hindus all over the world. The golden temple Built in Pagoda style, houses the sacred linga or phallic symbol of Lord Shiva (i.e.; male). Thousands of pilgrims from inside and outside of Nepal visit this temple all around the year to pay respect to lord Shiva. Pasupatinath is highly regarded as the master of all living beings of the entire universe. The temple is also famous for its astonishing pagoda style architecture. The two tier roofs of the temple are embellished with gold and the four main doors on each direction are adorned with silver.

Pashupati area is regarded as one of the most important pilgrimage site by the followers of Hinduism. On the especial occasions like Ekadashi, Sankranti, Mahashivaratri, poornima congregate here in a far greater number. There are many legends describing the existence of the temple of lord pasupatinath. According to gopalraj bamshali, the oldest ever chronicle in Nepal, this temple was built by supuspadev, a lichhavi king, who according to the stone inscription erected by jaya deva. Believers in Pasupatinath, mainly Hindus are allowed to enter the temple premises. However non-Hindu visitors can catch a glimpse of the temple from across the river. They can still visit the exteriors, funeral Ghats, river and most importantly depending upon the season on the river bank that is opposite to the pasupatinath temple.

The arati is worth watching, major attractions of the ritual follows where three large structure with fifty-four diyo (small oil lamp) are raised to lord Shiva. The arati is not only an offering to lord Shiva but also becoming and important tourism attraction that should not be missed while exploring pasupatinath area.
